Securing Fair Compensation for Victims of Spinal Cord Injury
Damage to the spinal cord is described by medical personnel as "complete" or "incomplete."
- Persons with a complete spinal cord injury suffer the total loss of feeling and control over body parts below the level of the vertebrae that was injured. If it was a lumbar vertebra, they cannot move their legs. If it was a vertebra in the mid or upper back, they lose function in the arms. Vertebrae in the neck can result in the loss of lung function and the person will need a ventilator.
- A partial injury allows for some feeling and motor control but sensation may be altered. The injured person may feel burning, or sharp or dull pain in the affected limbs. He or she may have a loss of strength, poor flexibility, a loss of range of movement, slow response times, or an inability to perform certain movements.
If you suffered a serious spinal cord injury, your life will never be the same but you do still have family, friends, and a future ahead of you. Types of Spinal Cord Injuries
We focus our personal injury practice on only the most seriously injured people — clients for whom financial compensation is going to make the most difference in their recovery. We have handled all types of spinal cord injury cases, including:
- Complete quadriplegia (also called tetraplegia): Permanent loss of movement of the legs, bowel and bladder, and trunk, as well as full or partial loss of hand and arm movement. Some tetraplegics require a ventilator to breathe.
- Complete paraplegia: Permanent loss of function and sensation in the legs, bowel, bladder and sexual region, as well as diminished use of the trunk. Arms and hands retain normal function. A person with complete paraplegia may be able to stand.
- Anterior cord syndrome: Damage to the front of the spinal cord results in temperature, touch, and pain sensation differences.
- Central cord syndrome: Damage in the center of the spinal cord will affect arm function while allowing some leg movement.
- Posterior cord syndrome: Damage to the back of the spinal cord results in poor coordination.
- Brown-Sequard syndrome: Damage to one side of the spinal cord causes differences in movement and sensation on the different sides of the body.
- Cauda equina lesion: Nerve damage that can cause partial or complete loss of sensation.
