Syracuse is the fifth largest city in New York with a population of about 145,000, and is the economic and educational hub of central New York State a region of about 1 million residents. Similar to Albany, Syracuse first grew as a transportation hub on the Erie Canal and then on railroads. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Syracuse enjoyed a vibrant growth in industry, which proliferated again in the WWII era. While manufacturing has waned since that time, the city remains a vital economic region in education and health care.
Syracuse is home to nationally known Syracuse University, a major research university, as well as the renowned Upstate Medical University and Hospital (the city’s largest employer). It is the county seat of Onondaga County.
